New Year’s Resolution: Wishes Are Free
For those who have been accomplishing at least 60% of their past new year resolutions, this write-up can serve as a refresher on some basics to goal setting. For those who haven’t been making much progress in accomplishing their goals, I suggest you read on with a notepad and pen to jot down anything that makes sense.
In my personal opinion, a New Year’s resolution is a casual way to describe goal setting. This is a stage or process which anyone who wants progress will have to go through. The progress being discussed does not necessarily refer to work matters. Progress basically means moving forward from the current position to the next desired destination (in other words, the next goal).
Goal setting should stick to being SMART; Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. Now, while these keywords may not sound like fancy, big words, they are nevertheless…often misunderstood. For example, overweight individuals who want to start exercising 3 times a week to lose 5kg a month will appear to be setting very realistic goals at first. Is it? If the individual has been exercising twice a week and currently loses 2kg a month, then I would say it is achievable. Yes.
But what if the individuals have never started exercising before? Has he/she taken into consideration what kinds of exercises are there to do? If so, where can they carry out her workout (without hurting themselves)? Will they have the stamina to even exercise twice a week, much less thrice! So while the goal appears realistic to some, it can actually be rather overwhelming to the goal setter. And more often than not, failing to achieve goals can be very demoralising.
Obviously, there’s not enough space to cover all aspects of goal setting right in this article. But the mnemonic SMART is a great way to first analysing what kind of resolutions you can set for yourself. I would suggest letting a mentor or someone more experienced in the subject to take a look at your goals, and help amend them if required. Remember that you set goals to be achieved, to make progress. They’re not there for you to remember, they need to be acted upon!
Like the words of the French Writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery describes; “A goal without a plan is just a wish”. Are your wishes coming true?
