Android Users: Do You Use Mobile Apps More Than Mobile Web?

Well, recent study by Nielsen sure proved that majority of the Androidnatics do. Take a look at this pie here… What’s not to like about mobile apps?! They have literally everything under the sun! From games apps like “Angry Birds” to shopping apps like “QuickMark QR Code Scanner” to business apps like “Entrepreneur Mobile”. The choices are endless and it goes on and on…

Check this out, Nielsen Smartphone Analytics in June 2011 discovered that the average Android user spends 56mins per day surfing the web and use apps. Within that time frame, however, 38mins are dedicated to using apps. That’s twice the time spent on mobile web itself!

web vs apps 2011

Frankly, how many Androidnatics are using more than 10 apps on a daily or even regular basis? Most people only use a handful of apps regularly.  The second pie here shows that the top 10 apps account for 43% of all the time Android users spend on mobile apps. The top 50 apps account for 61% of all time spent. There are a total of about 250,000 Android apps in the market at this time. According to a study by Chetan Sharma Consulting, mobile app downloads should jump from 7 billion in 2009 to almost 50 billion in 2012!

Time Spent in Apps 2011

Nielsen’s data was based on a panel of 5,000 U.S. users in June 2011 by tracking their usage via software on the devices. It has been observed that consumers were starting to spend more time using apps and was predicted that the “center of gravity for interactive media” was moving toward a non-HTML environment. Since then, users have been spending more time each day — 81 minutes compared to 74 minutes — using mobile apps than surfing the web.

Dealing With An Addict In The House

Enjoyment is one thing and knowing when to stop is another. Addiction is something that can involve almost any activity and one very well known hobby is gaming. Youths nowadays appear to be spending several hours a week on gaming and such behaviour might be causing some concern.

Studies funded by MOE have shown that youths are spending over 37 hours a week on computer games. Aside from experiencing hand and wrist pain, – which are pretty obvious symptoms – addicted gamers may have reduced social skills and face problems in school.

37 hours a week may not seem like much, but remember that each hour spent on gaming is an hour lost in doing something productive. Productive efforts can be something like homework or spending quality time with friends and family. While there are people who get paid to play games on a national level, this is only a small percentage and most people don’t have anything to show for their “efforts” that go into gaming.

So what should parents do if the gaming addict at home is beginning to cause some worry? One centre that provides information on how to deal with such issues is Touch Cyber Wellness. They help youths deal with their gaming addiction and provide guidance on how to utilise their time more effectively.

If you wish to try intervening, it is suggested that you understand your child’s interests before discussing it with him/her. Try doing some research and see why the game is so interesting. Having some common ground to talk about will go a long way in getting more connected with your child.

Life After Suicide

Such a topic may appear morbid at the very least, but it is something that is constantly happening and should be taken very seriously. What we are looking at here however, isn’t what causes suicide attempts but the consequences of such an action.

It has been found that the main reason for suicide is either depression or some form of despair. After a series of negative life experiences, when the individual feels that there is no use in living and hence, contemplates ending his/her life. This means that people who commit suicide are seeking a way out of their current misery.

As unlikely as it may appear at first, suicide is not a quick way out of any situation. The problems that triggered this behaviour still remain after the person has ended his/her life. In fact, what happens is that even more problems are created for the loved ones left behind.

In fact, the problems created by an individual’s suicide are exclusively for loved ones. Distant friends, acquaintances and colleagues will bear nothing more than a memory of the suicide victim. Close friends and family however, become scarred for life and before taking time to deal with their loss, have to see to matters like funeral arrangements.

So instead of making a “clean getaway”, additional burden is imposed upon people closest to suicide victims. Naturally, such burden might stress another person and push him/her over the edge, leading to yet another suicide.

The main point here is to realise the rippling effects of suicide and know that it is never an option, no matter how dire things may appear to be. Leaving shattered pieces of one’s problem behind for your loved ones to grieve over hardly sounds like a feasible exit.
